Legal Resumes & Cover Letters for Students
A resume is a advertising tool that serves as an introduction to a possible employer. They are
necessary when applying for volunteer and paid law clerk positions as well as attorney positions.
Your resume should highlight your strengths and background in a way that will convince a
potential employer to take a closer appear at you. For this reason, you will want to compile one
early in your law college career and update it as you establish extra academic credentials and
relevant expertise.
Resumes should usually be accompanied by a cover letter. Whether or not the resume is mailed, faxed or
sent electronically, a cover letter will provide the personalization that you want to produce with a
possible employer. Information regarding cover letters is integrated later in this handout.
RESUME ETHICS
In a competitive marketplace, the temptation to exaggerate one’s credentials can happen don’t allow yourself fall

Resumes are an individual expression of who you are. They are also your 1 opportunity to make
a great first impression. The idea is to set yourself apart from the rest of the crowd, while nonetheless
maintaining the traditional professionalism needed in the field of law.
Remember, the resume is not a total autobiography! It is a prospectus for the long term. Its
primary job is to convince potential employers to contact you for an interview. A good resume
should:
o Be eye-attractive
o Highlight your significant accomplishments
o Be logically displayed for a 30-second (or less) evaluation
Identify Your Abilities
It is occasionally difficult to fully and successfully inventory and assess your own abilities profile. Ask
yourself: “What unique abilities have I developed which permitted me to perform successfully in
my previous actions/jobs?” Do not be concerned that you have small or no previous experience
in legal jobs. Job abilities are transferable. For instance, the communications abilities learned in a
retail position will be helpful in your long term legal profession when counseling customers. Categorize your
abilities as follows – all 3 categories are important and highly valued by employers!
o Technical/Expert Abilities – abilities that are associated to executing inside a occupation and
acquired by training, training, reading, and/or hands-on experiences (i.e., internships,
clerkships, volunteer opportunities). These abilities are often listed in advertised occupation
postings: e.g., legal research abilities, creating abilities, working knowledge of a particular region
of law (e.g., Uniform Industrial Code).
