resume tips for college students

If you are a college student searching for a job or internship your resume will look exactly like everyone else's and that can make your job search challenging.

What can you do is to get your resume noticed when all of the candidates are basically equal when considering their educational background? First of all, you can, and should, do more than just go to class. Add as much experience to your resume as you can - volunteer, intern, work, and/or join school clubs and organizations.

Getting extra experience doesn't just bolster your resume. It will also help you explore career options and assist you to find out what you do - and do not - need to do sooner or later.

The next step is to create your resume stand out from the competition. The key to resume writing success is to properly present your experience so that it will attract your prospective employers and help you to get invited for an interview. Here are resume tips for college students you can use to make sure that your resume makes the best impression.

Heading.

There should be a heading at the top of your resume that includes your own name, mailing address, telephone number and current email address. If you've a professional website you can include your web address too, but make sure the content is 100% safe for work first.

Education.

List any college degrees that you've earned here, as well as special learning experiences for example professional certificates. If you ever completed a thesis, you may also include a brief mention of this project. Students who've yet to earn a degree can list their anticipated date of graduation like this: Bachelor of Business Administration, Expected May 2012.

Objective.

It is generally best to write a cover letter and exclude the career objective. But if a prospective employer has asked applicants not to submit a cover letter, then it is recommended that you include one or two sentences that concisely describe your goals for the position.

Selected Experience.

Using the word 'selected' serves two functions: First, this implies that you are only describing previous jobs that have a direct effect on your qualification for the present position. Second, for all those students who're worried about a lack of work history, it indicates more experience without making any false statements.

Take this space to list any jobs, internships, volunteer positions or other professional experiences which are germane to the position. Keep job descriptions as short as you possibly can, highlighting only the relevant duties.

Skills.

This is the opportunity to draw attention to any important professional skills that you may have that are not explicit in your education or experience information. Consider such things as computer skills (be specific, especially if the position relies on a particular piece of software), foreign language skills or creative skills. If you are seeking inspiration, read over the job description again and try to distill why you would be a good fit into a list of skills - just be careful not to copy their list of desired skills verbatim onto your resume.

Honors & Awards.

This section isn't needed, however it are needed to complete space if required or highlight special achievements. It's ok to include academic awards here because they demonstrate diligence and hard work.

Activities & Special Interests.

It is another 'filler' section that isn't required, but could be useful to show evidence of intangible skills like leadership or communication. Don't list every club or student group you ever joined, but consider adding organizations that are relevant to the position as well as more generally impressive roles such as student government.
